The President of the Newberry Library and the Dean of the University of Illinois Chicago Library invited colleagues from several libraries, archives and museums in the Chicago area to meet and explore opportunities for collaboration. The group met in 2006 and several times over the following year to discuss possibilities. The group ultimately focused on primary resources about Chicago as an area where collaborative effort could result in a significant impact on the visibility and use of these collections. This informal group tentatively named itself the Chicago Library Collaborative.
