Wild in the City: Chicagoland's Urban Ecology

Seeds of Change - Introduction

The Chicago Botanic Garden blossomed out of an idea to make Chicago’s motto - "Urbs in Horto" - City in a Garden - a reality. Of course, the idea of “greening the city” would come much later, but the seed was planted, so to speak, to form the Chicago Horticultural Society, an institution with a mission to encourage the people of Chicagoland to not only become aware of horticulture, but to love it, too. As the Society evolved, so did its mission from “…fostering an increased love of [horticulture] among the people,” to “We cultivate the power of plants to sustain and enrich life.” This evolution happened over the last 130 years.
