Although the first march received a great amount of attention, it did not succeed in its main stated goal: convince the school board to cut Willis loose. In response, a second march was planned in 1964. Many of the same groups participated in this one; however, organizers would later agree that the second march gained less momentum than the first due in part to other causes like the movement against the Vietnam War siphoning off activist energy.
